IP Address to Ping

Hello, occasionally, there are potential clients who request an IP address to ping to test the network.

What is the IP address(es) to give out? Is there an anonymous IP address we can give to potential clients? One that doesn't come back on a whois as Vortech?

Thanks, Allen

you could just tell them to ping your service domain.

Thank you Brangwyn!

Though, this does come back w/ Vortech plastered all over it. I was kinda hoping there was an annonymous IP set up for this use.

btw, I (and I would suspect a lot of others) owe you a beer for the wonderful input and support you have given these forums. Your SQL posts have helped me immensely. Just recently in fact, when some SPs and other info did not want to transfer.

You may want to look into setting up a server status page, that grabs the status of the server automaticaly. there are some threads here somewhere with the code you need to do this. just do a search for server status. That way your clients can check the status of any of the servers when ever they want.

I was thinking he wanted this more as a speed test than a server status myself.

If your customers are only doing a ping test then they won't see the vortech info, a traceroute on the other hand will display the rdns info as will an ipwhois etc

You could try using 66.103.132.6 which looks to me like its a router just outside vortech's network the whois for this shows "Colo-Solutions" as the owner anyway

Brangwyn, THANKS again.

That IP is exactly what I was looking for.

You are correct that some may just ping the given IP, but I suspect the more inquisitive would definitely start checking on the company they were looking at hosting with. I also note that it seems that only the more knowledgeable of potential customers even ask for a test IP to ping.

Silverbug, thanks for the heads-up. I have seen the threads and the nice work that gadgetgal99 and others have contributed for the server status scrape. When I get some time I'll definitely be looking at implementing something along these lines.

Thanks to all.

Allen

P.S. Brangwyn and a few others may not attend the seminar for fear of being mobbed. I can see it now,
Brangwyn has left the building... (in deep echoing voice)
