somereseller:

For Unix (assuming your speaking unix), Webshell3 has a 'protect' button that allows you to create the .htaccess file - I'm not 100% sure how to use it, since I'm all windows, but think you'll have no trouble with it.

I'm curious if anyone knows how to protect folders under windows plans?

The protect button creates the htaccess file, but you need to provide a user/password list for this to work and WebShell does not provide a tool to create this list.
Even worse : htpasswd is not installed...

Yes, webshell 3 works just fine.

DjSpin has written a nice tutorial on this, found here, http://www.matrixwebhosting.net/foru...ight=.htaccess

Basically don't change any of the initial settings, in the top of the editing .htaccess window it will say "location: /mydomain/folder" copy the /mydomain/folder there, and paste it in the box for "AuthUsersFile", then add somethig to the name, i.e. /mydomain/folder/protect, then click the Create/Edit button beside the box. It will pop up a window and say something to the effect of "error: file not found, would you like to create this file now" click create. After the file is created it will have a window saying "enter username and password" and a password confirmation box. After entering the user/pass it will give say user created sucessfully" and give you a list of users, you can add more if you wish, or you can hit the button at the bottom that says "create", after clicking that, click "Save" in the editing .htaccess window, and there you have the username/password protection you say didn't exist!

No control panel option for this as of yet. You could use an ASP app.

File permissions can be changed by request through a support ticket. For single/owner use protection (and with FrontPage installed) you can request R/W permissions be turned off.

Access would then require you to enter your FrontPage username and password. Obvious downside is that you only have one login/password and it's not something you would want to pass out to others.

Hope this helps

For the windows users out there, you might want to check this out:

Is there a way to use webshell 3 in ssl mode? Otherwise you have to login insecurely to use htprotect. Kinda ironic?

We all know that there is no "security inside" with Hsphere.

It's possible nonetheless to use many tools from outside the CP.

Login to https://unix.yourdomain.com/webshell3/index.php

Thanks. I was aware of that. I have used the links before w/o aliases because w aliases(my domain) it doesn't work. (Get disconected)May be you have a cert for your domain.
Also you have to point it to the right unix server like unixX etc... or it does not work. At least for me. I get disconnected. Even after all of that it ends up in a non encrypted page after you log in. So hopefully it is keeping passwords out of clear. Unfortunately, that's thy way it is. I just use another ftp user name not the main as an added protection.
