why are they so negligent?

Recently, most probably beginning of this week, 2Checkout SSL certificate was expired and for a day or two all the people tryied to pay through was getting the warning from their browsers.

And now, I see that Microsoft's passport.NET SSL certificate is expired. and getting the warning whenever I try to access a passport.NET enabled site.

Even Microsoft.com certificate expired on Saturday, March 27, 2004 2:08:35 AM

I wonder why these big companies are so negligent and just can't keep their bookkeeping well?

Any comments?

One problem too I believe is that the date check is done client side, so if your in a timezone ahead of the SSL site then its actually expiring for you before it's expiring for them, they're likely to only update it based on their timezone rather than everyone elses.

For instance lets say a servers in GMT-12, here in NZ we are GMT+12 so it could be a day at least before the certificate actually really expires based on their timezone and they update it.

I am yet to use a SSL certificate.
But won't they receive any pre warnings about its expiration from the service provider?

Depending on these people with "closed eyes" will one day lead us into a total catastrophe!

Are you kidding me!?!?! Even small hosting clients don't usually wait until the day of expiration to replace the Cert, I can't believe that Microsoft has someone sitting in front of a PC and waiting for the clock to strike 12 on the expiration date???

Actually most people I know seem to leave it till the day AFTER it's expired, some people just don't care that much about their certs I guess.

There may be a missconception out there that you can't renew it earlier, I dunno, but it does seem pretty common to me.

I renewed my mine last year almost 2 months in advance just so I wouldn't wait until the last minute and end up forgetting.

I am not surprised either. That's like being surprised these companies are building new products that only have 90 day warranty. The mainstream trend has always been to be as cheap as possible. You noticed because it cost you money. Heck look at cars that they won't add a safety feature to because it cost an extra 32c a car. They put horrible stuff in peoples food to make more money...never worrying about their health. This is human nature...not mine, but many peoples'...and it affects everyone. Climbing off my soapbox now
