Kattouf,
You are welcome to Order a dedicated server from us for one of your clients. Mark it up however you would like over our initial charge.

Would the server contain any information that would show it being owed by vortech? like the windows license etc.?

If it is that simple, i will do it.

A dedicated server would have no mention of vortech or any other company. Just a server with a blank OS install.

Not sure if this would work, but tell me what you think. Have a dedicated server page with pricing, and provide a signup link. Have the initial sign up be a dollar, just to establish contact and cc info. Then contact them and get the specifics on which server they want. Then set up a custom billing job in the cp for their server. Be sure to mark them up to make it worth your time acting as contact and support go-between.

Well, you've always given me good advice in the past so I'll take your word for it when you say it's no small task and I certainly don't any extra time on my hands. But on the other hand, I spend a lot of time fixing things that suddenly stop working in the shared environment.

Vixen, do you mean that if I get an unmanaged vps and the hard drive goes out I have to pay to fix it? And moreover, the reason I would want a vps is that nobody ever upgrades or changes anything unless I requested it. I don't sell hosting and do my billing via quickbooks. I just offer managed hosting to clients I have done sites for. Probably could set one up in my home but I'd be afraid my dog might eat the damn thing! Good thread; I'm learning a lot.

VPS is still shared but a higher quality shared... (you get root access, at least a vitual root)

I'm pretty sure that the dedicated server is what Vixen was referring to with having to pay for maintenance... which I really wonder about this as you have no control over the hardware, no idea if it was used previously, and are for better or for worse leasing the hardware. If it breaks you pay to fix it? I don't know if this is a common practice or what.

I can't speak for Vixen, but I believe she was referring to colocating or leasing a server elsewhere without full management. If you have a box at EV1 or The Planet it is not uncommon to hear that one of their staff has reformatted your machine after the client asked for an OS patch. Most situations where you lease a server the hardware issues are covered. The level of service and the turn around time on getting it fixed properly will depend upon how much you are paying. You aren't going to get the level of service you get here or at rackspace for 140.00 a month. You'd be lucky to get cogent bandwidth and a speedy reboot for that.

To add to that. These things don't run themselves. I don't think Brad pays the Sys admins the going rate to make sure the boxes are plugged in. Security hardening, patches, and the needed fixes are why people don't run their own boxes. Would you know what to do if your box was hacked or had a kernel panic? I wouldn't.

Good point. Hell I don't even know what that stuff means.
