thanks for the comments, all. Brad (or anyone), feel free to emulate if you like. Patents or copyrights are silly. but if you do, e-mail me (plusbryanATgmail.com) your site link - i'd like to see it!

generic: yeah, if there was a way I could somehow build a robot that would write on my whiteboard in your handwriting, that would be really slick! but there's a couple reasons why I did it this way and not the standard "guestbook" way. for one, this allows me complete censorship control - if brad posted something inappropriate, I just could ignore it.

so far I've gotten postings from a frog, satan, and other fine characters. because I don't want to scare people that come to my apartment, I think I won't post satan's message.

second is just the style - I like the idea mostly because anyone who visits my apartment ends up writing on my whiteboard now, because they know they have an impact on my web site. similarly, people on the web from faraway lands can actually have a physical impact on my apartment. I wish I could affect someone else's apartment!

Brad: I got two messages from you, one has been posted for the next update. What happened when you tried to submit? I *am* getting a lot more hits to the submit script than I'm getting mails, so I'm worried something about my ajax isn't working right.

Oh, and by the way, ajax (the technology that lets you submit info withou refreshing the page) is about the best thing since css. try it out!
