Dynamic IP and Subdomain

Query ;

one of our client asks this Q :

whenever we connect to an ISP, a dynamic IP is generated., Now this client has made a software to MAP His SUBDOMAIN automatically to this Dynamic IP

so, for eg., something.mydomain.com will be mapped to 1 IP

As the IP is dynamic, it changes everytime.

the client's need is, he has to configure this DYNAMIC Ip in the server where mydomain.com resides.

So everytime, an IP is allocated, it should get registered on the server so that anyone accessing something.mydomain.com outside (all over the world) will reach this IP.

is this possible ?

You should look in to a Dynamic DNS services like DynDNS.com There was a discussion here a few months ago about this... not sure because I barely scratched the surface but I'm sure Brangwyn could offer advice.

I will be looking in to this myself in more depth as I would like to create an access point to my TS server here via a subdomain... (and other uses ).

Some (maybe even most) firewalls have built in support for Dynamic IP providers... so it would handle comunication to the provider periodically or when ever it changes to update your IP at the provider... automating the process. (Probably along the lines of what your client created)

Yeah, that sounds odd. Does he want to forward his domain ip to this dynamic isp ip? Registrars offer this kind of service also thru affiliates often for free. Is this for backup?

Dynamic DNS is the way to go, but he won't be able to use Vortech DNS for the sub domain, he'll have to use something like dyndns which can be updated using their own software tool.

Hi there!

Here's what I do. It's working very well for me.

1. Signup with DynDNS service and they will provide you a subdomain eg. you.THEY.COM
2. Configure DSL modem or the utility from them to update the IP at DynDNS NS servers
3. Login to HSphere and create a DNS CNAME entry for the sub domain you wanted to point to your dynamic IP domain (you.THEY.COM). Eg. subdomain.yourdomain.com will be pointing to a CNAME of you.THEY.COM
4. Finally, make sure you give a very low (and reasonable) TTL value for the entry.

start accessing the HOME pc using your new subdomain.yourdomain.com

This should work without a trouble. Please share your thoughts.

That should work fine, it's basically what everyone above was suggesting but you've elaborated on it nicely

Tho it probably doesn't fall on you, but you might mention to your customer...depending on their situation that: Really depends on what they are doing.
1. It might not be a great setup performance-wise.
2. If they are using a personal isp they usually don't allow that kind of thing.

It worked very well for me to do a live radio broadcast from my HOME during the last year TSunami in our part of the world.

Could you point me in the right direction?
- Does the "yourdomain.com" have to be my hsphere service domain?
How do you make CNAME entries for domains other than the service domain?
- Can you give an example of a "very low resonable TTL" value.

1. No, I have done this for my service domain as well as my clients. So, it is not limited to service domain. But, you may have to enable custom DNS configuration in the plan.
2. Login to client CP and select the domain. Click on "edit" to edit the DNS configuration for the domain in "Edit Domain" area. Go down and click "Add DNS CNAME Record" in the "Custom CNAME records" section. In the "New custom CNAME DNS record" window, enter the "subdoamin" in Name field, TTL, and most importantly "your dynDNS domain" in the DATA field.
Thats all.
3. This is you have to decide. I dunno the recommended minimum value for Vortech. If your DSL connection drops very often you may have to give a lower number. FIVE minutes will be OK, I think ;-)
