6/21/2003 Mail Server Fixes...

At this time, I do not foresee any additional changes to the mail servers.

The following things were implemented/fixed:
+ MAIL FROM DNS Check: MAIL FROM domain address must resolve; This helps
stop bounces in the system, which keeps the queue clear for your mail.

+ MAIL FROM Locality check: You can only relay mail with a MAIL FROM
+ address
of your domain; This helps us to crack down on spammers so they do not overwhelm the mailservers and prevent your mail from getting through.

+ SMTP AUTH - It now works. Your MAIL FROM domain must match the domain
that you authenticate with. IE, if you authenticate with the address example@hsphere.cc, your MAIL FROM domain MUST be @hsphere.cc. This is another way to ensure that spammers can't spoof their MAIL FROM address.

In addition, we are CONSIDERING switching to SMTP AUTH only for two reasons:

1) Extra defense against spammers

2) It SHOULD fix the "password prompt" when checking mail in Outlook that many people are experiencing. The reason it should fix this is because the pop program will no longer have to record the POP-before-SMTP file, which we believe is the cause for the popup.

If we do decide to swtich entirely to SMTP AUTH, it won't be for a few weeks, so don't freak out! We will be sure to give you PLENTY of time to inform your customers. We will email everyone on the newsletter and make a new post on the forum if we decide to go this route. We do appologize for the confusion about it in the past week.

I do not anticipate any more bugs, as I have tested the changes extensively.

thanks, I vote for SMTP AUTH as move a in the right direction. would this affect script-generated mail at all?

It should not affect script based mail, moving to SMTP AUTH would not either.
