ProFTP on *nix

I recently set up a linux server (myfirst) and ProFTP was installed by default. The web server works great but when I try to ftp files with Dreamweaver I always get this "Waiting for server" message. Sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn't. I don't know if it's ProFTP or Dreamweaver but I don't have problems ftp'ing with DW on other servers. I've read some negative stuff about ProFTP; anyone experienced problems with it or have suggestions on a better ftp server? I'm a linux newbie and don't know much. Is there perhaps something I need to tweak in it or could there be some sort of cron jobs it's running that causes the "Waiting for server message? There's only one site on the server and it's too new for anyone to have found, except maybe hackers and spammers.

I'd check to make sure proFTP was started and listening on the appropriate ftp command and data ports. Then I'd look at the firewall/router settings for those ports.

After checking the logs on the linix box I see entries where ProFTP is delaying 170 us etc. Lots of them. Sometimes it works fine but most of the time I get this long "Waiting for server..." message in Dreamweaver. If it were a port problem on the router would it not consistantly not work at all? Does the same thing when the firewall is shut down. Thanks.

The problem seems to be instability or a bug in ProFTP. Some users have reported delays for over an hour. The temporary fix is to modify
/etc/proftpd.conf and add or uncomment the line:
DelayEngine off

The DelayEngine should be set to "off". So far it's working for me. Anyone know of a good free isp control panel other than IspConfig?
