Index Server

Has anyone written a script against Index Server on Windows servers? I see that it is supported by Vortech (http://matrixwebhosting.net/forum/sh...&threadid=3501), but wanted to make sure if it works or anyone had any problems before I invested a lot of time developing a solution which I may not be able to host.

Thank you for your input in advance.

I'd also like to know the details about Index Server implementation. I have a potential (big) client who will need to use it.

Replies from Vortech...?

You might find it's not supported actually (Tech will have to confirm). The component is installed by default I think, but unless the indexing service is started and properly configured you won't be able to actually do anything.

Thanks Brangwyn, will check it out. Will be very sad if index server is not available!

Id really be surprised if it was, theres a considerable overhead on the server to run it, it does a lot of disk activity keeping the indexes up to date.

That's what I was thinking. It's a hog.

erk.. bummer. What about full-text indexes in SQL Server - is that a viable alternative?

Probably restricted to DBO and again not something generally enabled on shared servers becuase of the extra disk space required for the full-text indexes.

I know this is an old thread...
Has Vortech policy changed regarding support for Index Server since this post?

The policy has not changed. Enabling indexing on large shared servers is impractical. The disk thrashes while indexing, the indexes themselves are pretty huge, and it takes so long to update that you will end up with old data most of the time anyway.

I undestand

Is there any way to enable this for one domain only?

Since Microsoft is competing with Google now, getting into the search engine game, do they have a viable product which can run on web servers besides Index Server? Or are they working on one?

No there isn't, and the policy is not to have it enabled, I'm afraid vortech aren't going to break their policy for even just one domain.
