Need Recommendations
My 10 year old wants to learn all there is to know about building websites. While this is comforting it also is daunting.
I think I would prefer to work with him going thru something vs. this is the way to do it because this is what Dad thinks, kind of thing. Are there any sites that you can recommend that we could explore together, that is kid based, that can be used to build a base of knowledge?

That would be a good place to start. Also... tutorials on free sites are real handy as well. (I am reluctant to post a link but ... oh well.) www.freewebs.com or Yahoo or other places targeting younger or more novice users. <edit> This looks promising too http://www.webmonkey.com/kids/ </edit> 10 years old... that's tough because you want it to be interesting. Do you get free webspace with your ISP? Sometimes they have good tutorials and you can create an account and cut him loose. A quick Google revealed this site http://build-website.com/guide/introduction.html looks okay. When I was introduced to building websites, I was an aircraft mechanic so I was as green as you get. The Air Force started at the very basics notepad and HTML... it is best to start there but it is likely a 10 year old will loose interest. Good luck ... maybe you should start your own website, "How I taught my 10 year old how to be a webmaster" .com

Thanks-good stuff.
The site idea is kind of cool. Maybe I'll consider a journal of "our" progress. Well as he is interested and after reading http://forum.vortechhosting.com/show...510#post103510 maybe I'll be training my own support staff. ![]()

i set up a subdomain and an umbraco install for my nine year old to at least experienc the UI of CMS type applications... he can play with the CSS, etc.
I remember a couple of years ago i gave a presentation to his class about html -- mostly the concept of a container tag, yadda, yadda. Some of the parents at the school that most of my kids attend would like an html class as part of the curriculum... when did school get so hard for kid?

Great topic.
My 11 year old is really into computers. He's been using PowerPoint and the like for a year or so doing "stuff". He also showed interest in a web page for his "characters" Tim and Tuck which he develops stories and the like for. So I decided to cut him loose. I installed FrontPage on his system (yeah, I know but it's really easy for him because he is used to using Word) registered a domain and cut him loose. He keeps messing around with it and sooner or later he'll figure it out. I haven't helped a bit. Been about a month now and he's only crashed the whole thing once. I registered domain and set him up an account on one of my servers. I figured I learned by just doing. Back in the days of Basic language I just thought it was so cool and everything I've learned I learned by doing. Never took a class, never read a book, just played around with it. He's the same way. www.timandtuck.com
