New project: roving drive-in

For the past year I've been running a project I'm dubbing "mobmov " (short for Mobile Movie). Basically, I run a projector and FM transmitter out of my car, and show movies to people like a drive-in. We show in lots of different places around Berkeley and SF. If any other VTer's are around in the SF bay area, I hope you come check it out sometime. It's all free, I just do it for fun and to meet people.

cool concept...

The only thing is the old "FBI Warning" on most movies about public performances

But I say, the hell with em, Stick it to the man!

Bryan,
I had no idea mobmov was a project of yours until this post and your personal site. btw: totally cool personal site.

Anyway, I came across your site when reading about the topic a few weeks back as a few friends and I have been doing this for over a year, at least in our own backyards. Started looking online after reading an article about http://www.thespoon.com/drivein/ "guerilla drive ins". It's soo much fun. Good luck in your endeavors.

That's amazing.... brilliant idea!
Wish we had the weather over here in the UK for projects like that I'd have to have a projector, FM transmitter and millions of umbrellas

How does the FM transmitter work... what do you use, how, etc.. etc... you got my attention

Well, the thing is Garreg, everyone's in their cars, so cold is not a problem. Gets too cold, they can turn on the heater. If you have the inclination, I'd say try it.

I really want to spread the idea to other places, so if anyone is interested in trying it out, there's an application form on the mobmov site. If I accept you (I will), you'll get custom video titles for your mobmov, ability to take signups on mobmov.org, plus a mailing list, and tutorials about how to set it all up.

It's kind of like the french do outside with a sheet and a bottle of wine. I miss drive-ins. They were fun. How do you handle the copyright issues tho?

to perform or display it at a place open to the public or at any place where a substantial number of persons outside of a normal circle of a family and its social acquaintances is gathered

guess it depends on the definition of "substantial"

...hey all you people watching the movie...you're my new best friends!! welcome to the circle

mresell: Everything that I show is either in the public domain (cartoons and commericals), and I request permission or purchase the rights to show anything else (feature films). I don't get a huge number of people at any one showing (10-15), so the studios typically allow it, or charge me a low fee which I'm happy to pay (through Swank usually).

The only slight objection I might get is about trespassing on some of these old abandoned parking lots at night in the warehouse district, but so far no one's seemed to mind.
