Well yeah 3+ hours later it was fine ... I went out and took some Photos for an hour was better when I came back. Probably nightly backups or something running when I was trying earlier it was pathetically slow at that time anyway.

Yea it seems to still get slow sometimes even using 1 system just for the CP and one for the DB. The CP system its self keeps a very very low load now about .01 to .05 now. The DB server is still getting hit a bit harder. I am thinking about maybe upgrading the CP PGSQL server up to 4 xeons, 8GB of ram and raid5 or raid10 ( since its a little faster but need 6 drives for that. )
We found out we can also split java off to its own systems as well, but that seems to be only the version they use now, tomcat is what they will be using in 2.4 and not sure if it supports that or not yet..

Don't forget like I mentioned a few weeks back, if your using Gig Ethernet NIC's and theyre 32 bit NICS rather than PCI-x on a board supporting 64bit NICS you could well be creating a bottle neck of your own, remember PCI bus is shared, trying to shove large amounts of data down it at 1000Mbs ... If the drives aren't on the PCI bus as well your probably alright, but even many onboard SCSI controllers will share the PCI bus.

We use this board http://tyan.com/products/html/tigeri7501.html with an LSI Logic SCSI 160 card the nic is onboard :
Intel® 82545EM Gigabit Ethernet controller (opt.) - One RJ-45 LAN connector with LEDs - Connected to PCI-X bus Its using PCI-X so it should be ok.. This is what I was thinking of upgrading it to http://tyan.com/products/html/thundergche.html but would use fiber for CP to pgsql server to make it even faster.. You can get 10GB fiber now right?? Never looked for the 10GB fiber cards..

Yeah that should definately be 100x better than a 32bit board.
My understanding is PCI-x 266/533 enables things like 10Gb fibre but it's still afaik pretty bleeding edge, you may be able to get cards but I haven't seen any personally. A quick skim over adaptec's site who are usually pretty quick to market with things only turned up some 2Gb cards That motherboard looks like it's supports PCI-x 100 so not fast enough for 10Gb Fibre I believe anyway (if its even currently available). |
