12/09/2003: mail1.hsphere.cc

SMTP has been stopped on mail1.hsphere.cc so that the queue can process and clear out. It will be reenable in about 10-15 minutes. This should be plenty of time for us to determine the cause of the backup.

It's almost cleared out. Found a few problem domains sending large volumes of bouncing / autoresponding mail.

During the down time what happens to our mail? Does it bounce back to the sender?

Nope, MTAs are designed to hold mail in the queue for at least 24 hours. If the sending MTA follows the rule, the mail will simply be deferred, not bounced.

mail1 is back up now.

no all windows servers use their built in SMTP for delivery via scripts.

Slow mail and server timeouts

I also have clients that are calling me complaining of "slow" mail delivery. They are getting a message while sending and receiving saying that the server has "timed out". I switched them over to Matrix last Sunday and they have been seeing mail problems since then.

What is the status of the mail servers? I read of a SMTP flush from Bladesnitz. Is there more information available about what is happening and is there a resolution in the works?

this happens from time to time where the outgoing gets clogged - looks like SMTP has been turned back on for mail1, but it may still be experiencing some lag.

Be sure your client is on mail one - you may be having issues with another mail server, in which case you should put in a TT.

I have to say mail1 seems to have some major issues from time to time... Not sure why. I have had 2 newsletters mysteriously cancelled that I am aware of. SI cancelled a subscription to a domain on mail1 because in mid november it started getting errors that the email addr did not exist(they use a probe)...obviously it did. They send a diagnostic email describing the issue. Obviously SI is not life or death, but these things are odd.

i have been having odd issues with not being able to send to other clients within the system--bounce says no such address--when i was the one who set them up in hsphere... anyone else experiencing this wierdness? i am currently involved in a fingerpointing exercise with support which by the way, does not happen very often for me -- the gang is great! i just thinking they might be overlooking something wierd here.

bootnumlock, did you submit a TT? Mail server problems are fairly rare now, or should I say, the problem being the mail server is fairly rare. Most of the time its a DNS issue or someone's configuration issue.

I'd be glad to take a look. I'm still trying to get everyone familiar with how to properly respond to mail server issues. So if you are still thinking its us and want me to have a look at it personally then say so in the email. It may take your ticket MUCH longer to be answered if you ask it to be left for me, but thats the risk you take =)

I'm having an issue where with my mailing list only some of the recipients are getting the email. It has about 150 recipients and it's being sent as one email with all the recipients being bcc on it. Has anyone else experienced something similar? The recipients who get the email are random since I added some email addresses that I can track.
