Any Ideas on This?

I have a client who registered her domain using an email address that, for whatever reason, she never used. When we actually built their site, we didn't activate the email to change the DNS but rather used the fax system at Network Solutions.

Recently, after realizing it had never been setup, I decided to go ahead and turn it on thinking it might be a good idea to monitor it. I went ahead and set up a forward for it going to my client's personal email box.

I did that at 4:30pm on Wednesday. On Thursday morning at 8am, I get a phone call from her assistant saying they received...get this...25,000 emails overnight. EVERY ONE of them was a bounce back and the emails that were using her box as a reply path were clearly from a spammer.

I immediately shut down the forward, but just to see for myself, I turned on an actual box with that username and used my email client to check it. In less than a minute, I had 150 emails - all bounced spam.

I had her email changed with Network Solutions to avoid that issue and just turned her box off, but is there any recourse for something like this? I did some research and the company sending the spam is based in Canada and is notorious for doing this.

Thanks for the help.

Matt,

That client of ours that got blacklisted last week...this was them. They haven't been sending ANYTHING. Someone REALLY got hold of them. Unreal.

I feel like taking a trip to Canada and having a talk with whoever is doing this.

Would that be a BYOB (in this case, Bring Your Own Bat) kind of talking to?

No, just a polite conversation between two reasonable adults. Now, if one of those adults HAPPENED to have a bat while having that polite conversation...

Were they just faking their email or were they actually using the servers? Cause I can't believe a reputable SBL would not be able to tell the difference. Not unless they were making it look like they were using the servers.
