TLD's we can/cannot use
Hello all. Brian here.
I sent a ticket to support a few hours ago, but I figured maybe I could get an answer here quicker. What TLD's can we use/cannot use with H-Sphere? Are there any I should know about? I am in an IM with a potential client right now that thinks most hosts can't host .ca, yet I would not know why. Thanks in advance. Brian |

I can't see why not, you can host .ca just like you do .com

That is what I thought. But I guess it is a good idea to ask and make sure what TLD's we can/cannot use.

This is from my support ticket. So I guess this answers the question:
"A: I am not aware of any TLDs not allowed. As long as you can setup the DNS (point the nameservers to us) then you should be fine." |

As far as just hosting the domains go, should be no problem with most any domains, except new.net domains, new.net is a scam IMO anyway.
However hosting your DNS on any domain is a different matter, seem to be different rules in making nameservers than just pointing to one. |

H-Sphere will support any valid TLD but there are at least two TLD's that require you have your own IP address to register a nameserver. We can open an account for .biz and .us but you will need to have your own IP for your name server that means you have to have our two largest accounts, that of course means you need to spend more money. Just something to keep in mind, I always hate telling someone that they need to "pay" their way out of a problem, I feel like a sleazy mechanic or car dealer, but those aren’t our rules, talk to your registrar.
Note that this only applies to a .biz or .us name that is being used as a service domain, any other time you don't need to register your name servers and it's no problem (i.e. 99.99% of the time). |

Looks like everyone so far has said it "should" work, so I just thought I'd mention that I am currently hosting .ca domains through H-Sphere with Matrix, so there's no question that it does work. Like TonyK said, treat it the same as a .com and you should be fine. Take care...

Hello,
.ru could be hosted here but DNS for these domains should be hosted elsewhere.

new.net
Speaking of new.net - I bought one of these a while back not knowing about the the plugin required until after I purchased it... I'm thinking maybe it was a waste of money... because the plugin thing is just lame.
Is there any way to modify my DNS settings so that it will recognize my .arts extension?... There's no way I would ever want to tell someone to download a plugin to visit my web site! ~ meta |

No .arts is not a real TLD is it? We only support the main/real TLDs. .com. net, org, .co.uk, ect, ect.

How about .INFO??
I already has one .INFO here. It works fine (though its an alias to another .NET here). DNS is maintained here too. [EDIT] Sorry, now understood what is that "new.net" you all are talking about. So, the following TLDs are in trouble? .shop .xxx .club .ltd .inc .travel .tech .sport .family .law .med .mp3

IMO new.net sucks! They got with a bunch of ISP's and also made a program to install on user machines which will translate their "fake" TLDs:
shop .xxx .club .ltd .inc .travel .tech .sport .family .law .med .mp3 These TLDs will not work for everyone as they don't have the software installed to resolve the name/ip nor are they connected to one of the "partner" ISPs. Personally, I think it's a potential danger to the real Internic TLDs and the already established DNS system. Besides, I shouldn't have to run client side software to resolve a domain name...that's just tacky!! Here's a good read: http://www.internic.net/faqs/authoritative-dns.html Last edited by CelticRaven : 03-21-2004 at 09:37 PM. |
