Why can't I upload my own htaccess files via ftp?

The password protect utility in the control panel does not work either (has cripting errors).

You can upload your own htaccess files, at least I believe you can on Unix.

For some reason Hsphere seems to hide the htaccess files. You can upload them using wsftp, though they may *appear* to have not uploaded. You can use the File Manager (WebShell) within your control panel to view and delete them.

I haven't tested to see if they actually work right, so far I've only used the File Manager to delete an htaccess that I could not delete via ftp (even shell commands didn't work)...I was trying to delete a directory and it kept failing as it wasn't empty, it appeared empty but when I used File Manager I saw there was an htaccess file in the directory.

Thanks, Jim, you got me on the right track. They uploaded and they work although I cannot see them with ws_ftp Pro. That is very unusual.

Vortech Admin, any thoughts on how to manange them via ftp?

I read that files (or folders) which start with a (.) are treated by Unix as hidden files and aren't visible in most FTP programs.

I use CuteFTP and had to make the following change to see .htaccess files:

1. Go to Edit and then Filters (CTRL+L)
2. "X" the box for "Enable remote filter (server applied filter)"
3. In the remote filter box type -la
4. Click OK

Now I can see them. Hope this might help someone.

Hmmmh, that's interesting. But this must have to do with some server side set up because I can see my htaccess files on other hosts without problem. Any more suggestions anyone?

It's depend on ftp server.

Almost all the servers set default list to the command "list" , but some of them set it to "list -la", like sandgnat said.

You must configure your ftp client to do this, in order to see any file which start with "."

Got it. Here are the instructions on how to do it in WS_FTP Pro:

On the remote site, under the MkDir button, locate the blank box. In the blank box type -la. This will list all files in the directory.

Maybe someone can use that info too.

.htaccess is only for apache, you will need to use sometihng like the ASPSecured for windows.

It is possible to use FrontPage Extensions for secure areas on your web site. Even you don't need Front Page by it self to manage it.

1. Activate FP Extensions
2. Login to http://domainname.com/_vti_bin/_vti_adm/fpadmcgi.exe
3. Create sub web with their own authentication structure.
