As for the appPool's thats not going to happen on our level there is no way we could run and app pool for every sites on a .net server that would not be cost efficient for us as it's going to just kill the server.
I held the same belief for a while, but after running one server now with about 200 appPools, it's not as bad as I thought it was going to be. If you let the appPool do it's thing and let IIS stop it etc the memory usage wasn't as bad as I was expecting it to be and this is on a server with only 2GB of RAM.

The worst APP I've seen so far though is DotNetNuke, and I'll bet that's also the reason many people are hanging out for .NET2. It's a dog of an application IMHO (many will disagree, but it's been the biggest bane on my servers period) I've seen inactive DNN websites sitting there holding 150-180MB of memory grrrr

if people are looking for a GOOD .net CMS app... i really recommend UMBRACO [umbraco.org] it is not 'feature rich' like a dotNet Nuke... you have to extend it, but for an out of the box cms that can be anything you want -- not the 3 column portal thingy... this is the way to go.

they have a great, stable version that runs in 1.1, but their newest version, which has many enhancements is 2.0...

Brangwyn... let me know on the 2.0 dedicated situation [or any of the vortech team]

Hmmm Brangwyn I can almost say 100% DNN is what they want to be able to run at least 50% of them think about a box with 100 DNN's running and if 25 of them are busy boy that would be bad bad bad with .net 2 on a shared server.

I can't say 100% that would be bad because I have not seen it or done it on a server yet. But I can say it could play hell and cause more issues than it's worth to be honest.

BTW we do have some servers we can even do managed server within the cluster if you really really want to run .net 2.0 you could go that route and we can make it work on your server within the cluster after the upgrade. We can't even install .net 2.0 in 2.4 as it kills H-Sphere from even being able to work on the box ( don't ask me I don't have a clue and get an answer from Psoft on as to why yet another reason we can't run it just yet. That is fixed in 2.5 and up ).

well, i am interested in migrating my scattered accounts to a single dedicated (that is in addition to my first one...) let me know what specs are available in a dedicated windows -- or have Dan [new guy] or Craig hit me with an email to let me know what hardware is available... would like to start migrating early 2007 and then utilize .net 2.0 when the functionality comes available for you guys...

happy new year to all.

Indeed version 4.4.0 which just came out is all about memory optimization of the DNN core for use in shared hosting environments. It's only available on .NET 2.0 and while I haven't done a baseline of it yet, it promises to be much more hosting friendly. Of course, that requires .NET 2.0 to be in place
Shaun Walker's blog on the DotNetNuke website has lots of recent entries on DNN and memrory utilization / tuning for shared hosting environments (based on time spent with Microsoft engieneers in labs at Redmond). Interesting reading.
Thankfully I'm finding other equally affordable options for my 2.0 websites (the majority of them). Just can't wait here any more.....

I agree to users looking for .net 2

.net2 is the most wanted option in windows hosting nowadays. cant deny that.

I have a similar ASP.NET 2.0 problem. I contracted a new customer for windows hosting and his application is made in 2.0, but it doesn't work of course. So Brad when is the upgrade to hshphere 3.0 scheduled?

I hate to see him leaving just for the stupid 2.0 support, but like this topic states, asp.net 2.0 is hot on windows hosting.

If security and resource usage really are such big issues, I'd favour a CF-type cluster and would gladly create some new plans for .NET 2. Although it'd also be great to see such a cluster still support PHP and classic ASP too. How about a poll Brad?

I have an account at another host for .net2 and mysql 4.1 sites. The other host handles .net2 as another cluster.

I'm begging for this. I've been searching all day for a new host but can't find similiar features for a comparible price. I can't justify going from here to there to pay almost twice as much for just asp.net 2.0
