Cool Support for Magento

I am converting all my old OSC sites over to the new Magento platform for a lot of reasons I won't get into here. But I am not sure that Vortech can handle the cart software. Here are the requirements. I think the php requirement is ok but the rest I don't know.

PHP 5.2.0 or newer, with the following extensions/addons:
PDO/MySQL
mcrypt
simplexml
DOM
MySQL 4.1.20 or newer
Apache Web Server

Does anyone know if these are all enabled on the unix side?

Thanks for any help. I have also thought about Presta but like Magento better.

thanks, e.

Perldiver

When I want to know exactly what's on a server, I use an old version of Perldiver (from http://www.scriptsolutions.com) which will tell me what's installed on that server.... as long as it can run a Perl script. I continue to use it as it's quite helpful on those accounts where this kind of information may not be so easy to get. I haven't tried the newer versions of Perldiver, the one I have was a single file script that worked very well.. newer versions were more complex than I needed. It was also useful to change the extension to "pl" on the older script so I could also use it on Windows servers... so if you want a copy of that one just let me know, I'll be glad to share it.

I set it up on a local XAMP server and I am very impressed with it, the admin side is wonderful. The store side looks modern and stylish with a cleaner more customer friendly checkout than oSC. The system requirements are not flexible however so you really need PHP5.2+ to run it.
I have a site using oSCommerce and it is reliable but clunky and untangling spegetti to modify. Magnento is very slick and profession in comparison.
I've also played with Freeway which has more features I need but it is built on a oSC platform which I would rather not get involved with again because I need pretty customized processing. It does solve many of the weaknesses of oSC for example it has support for booking services and reservations, easy template assignment, better reporting and a lot more flexibility. For regular physical items with few options, any of the carts does fine.

I finally built my own with PHP/MySql that does exactly but it took a long time and a lot of work, and probably does not apply to other business needs. Since we are in the middle of our busy booking season, I have not turned the new cart on. It is not really a cart but a full tour creation and booking application that automates much of the office processes as well as taking order and printing tickets.

I tried to install an early beta of Magento here, but it was not fully supported and it wouldn't run. Not sure of the current beta... which is a bummer because I could have sworn they were set to release the final a week or so ago. Guess s*#t happens.

I did get it to run elsewhere, and it's amazing - even for the early beta I have.

Found a good Magento host

I’ve found a host that has been extremely helpful in helping me get Magento up and running. Their servers are configured for Magento and within just a few minutes you can have your site running.

I still have my reseller account here at VT but set up an account for one client on http://www.spherewebhosting.com/ to run the new Magento 1.0.

I have a shared plan which runs fast and I‘m happy with their support.

If you inquire indicate your intent to run Magento so your account will be directed to the Magento configured servers.

Thanks for the report. I am surprised by the features and low prices of their reseller and even personal accounts. Not many have the feature set such as PHP4 and 5, Ruby on Rails, Joomla install scripts and H-sphere 3 and all the installed cart, CMS etc scripts....things have really changed since I first started looking for a reseller account so I could have a variety of features a number of years ago. Now the same or better capabilities are available for dirt prices. At $5.95, it is worth picking one up as a backup mail server or service ticket site or whatever.
Magento has a strict set of requirements but your new acount has all that is needed. I got a VPS for my shopping cart which I wrote requiring PHP 5.2. It had 4.4.2 but I tried installing 5.2 myself as a rank beginner, but ended up going ahead and upgrading to the lastest stable versions of MySql, ZendOptimizer, and Apache at the same time. I needed a little help building the correct _with command line string but all is working perfect now. Support with the new host is great, particularly for not being a managed server. I made sure everything was there to run Magento if needed, if my homebrew cart blows up.
Keep us updated about your Magento progress. I run it as a test on my development machine, a laptop dual boot with Ubuntu Server and Vista, and it works there now but not before I updated my Ubuntu/php/MySql last weekend. Nice cart, better than almost any commercial products I've seen. The other one I am playing with is Freeway, that has a nice integration into Zoomla. It has the advanage of having options for rental and reservations built in. But it isnot as pretty and slick. It is about as sophisticate a cart can be and still have a core of oScommerce.

It's not likely we'll see Magento able to be installed on H-Sphere servers any time soon unless they are just installing the H-Sphere package as you lose your customizations to H-Sphere when you install the required mysql extension. At least that's what I've been told. I agree, Magento looks very promising. As a http://www.spherewebhosting.com/ user I find them to be an exceptional hoster and highly recommend them. Magento runs very well on their Cpanel servers.

I don't quite follow. If you are referring to running their build of php, then possibly. We don't run their build of php. One client reported that there were some missing php extensions that they require. I asked for a full list after installation of the first missing extension only prompted for another. I plan on installing them on his server tomorrow when I get back to work. Hopefully it will work fine.
