using seperate email server

I am trying to point a domain to a seperate email server. I have shut off mail service on the current server and setup a custom mx record that looks like this: domain.com IN MX 5 000.000.000.000 (the ip is the ip of the mail server).

The above is not working, how can I correctly accomplish this task?

Thanks, Justin.

How long have you given things to propagate? it won't happen instantly, you'll need to give it some time .. what you have done though looks to be correct to me.

MX records must be names, not IPs. You need to setup an A record for the IP and give it a name (IE, mail.domain.com A 1.1.1.1) and then point the MX record at it (MX mail.domain.com)

Sadly, it does. Now there's a feature request for the future... MX sanity checks.

I guess we'll have to wait until 2.5 for that!

Would be nice if they could add the ability to create NS records too one day.
