MSSQL Issues
Greetings,
I have been getting a lot of my end users saying their web sites are slow... A few of you have tested and said it seems okay. I seem to think the problem is the SQL server. I'm not sure if there are too many DB (400+) or one DB using too much resources... Here is my deal. I am using Max Portal 2.5 with mssql back end db. I have about 120 members (Most on at a time is 3 or 4) and I assume the db is about 5-10mb in size. In the past I have allways used access for the portal for smaller sites 40 members or so. When I first installed the portal in ran very well fast as could be. The last week or two it has been running slow. No so much if you load one page, but when you start reading the forum it really slows down... We are talking sometimes a minute for a page to load. Is there anything that can be done? The site is xoforum.com if anyone wants to check it out. Most of the posts are dumb because most of the users are 18-22 lol. My second question is... Since I am new to mssql is there a better client than the MS Enterprise Manager? It seems not to run so well on XP and was wondering if anyone uses anything different? Any thing like Myphpadmin for mysql? Also how do I back up the DB? Each time I try I get wrong access errors. I understand that Vortech should be backing it up, but in the past they have lost all my data as well. So I do not want to count that as my backup. Is there a way to go from SQL to Access? I know I have gone from Access to SQL but I'm not sure if I could go back. Also I did test the files on another Vortech NT server (16) and it was a tad bit faster at first but then slowed down again. Sorry for the spelling and gramer mistakes... I was in a hurry. Sincerely, Mark Laudenbach Laudenbachm@Ikoh.com |

Are the problems on the xoforum all the time? That site is flying right now, I am browsing around, viewing forum topics and such with no delay, just BOOM, its there.

I have numerous client sites with heavy MSSQL back-ends and they all seem to be snapping right along. I am not familiar with MaxPortal, but my first guess is that your site itself is slow due to inefficient coding or some other problem. You could downsize to Access, but you would be the first person I know who wanted to move to Access from SQL for performance reasons. Usually it is the other way around.
![]() In terms of your other question, there is a web-based alternative to Enterprise Manager based on .NET: http://www.aspenterprisemanager.com/ Admin was going to install it for our use but I'm not sure if it is available yet or not. Good luck. EDIT: I also just went in to check it out. Clicking on the "Forum" link took a long time to load (15-20secs) but once I am inside the forum itself things are zooming along just like landiserv says above.

I know most of the people saying it is slow are from CA and the Central States... I live in MN and it seems slower than normal. The maxportal is one of the best writen portals out there (so they say) it is very easy coding and allways cleans up after it self. I selected this forum because I understand ASP (somewhat) and access. It is based on Web Wiz Guide Forum. I also like Snitz but it seems to be very heavy coding and hard on a server.
The web sql clinet looks nice... Is it somthing that needs special config? could I install it on my domain? Sincerely, Mark |

I haven't actually done it, but I'm pretty sure you can just install the .net enterprise manager on your own. Do you have a link for that MaxPortal software? I googled it but did not find it...I have never been a very big fan of Snitz Forums.
p.s. Where are you in MN? I am in Minneapolis.

How can I downsize to access? I do not want to bring the site to access I just want to test it on another server to see if there is any improvement.

I'm pretty sure you can just import all the tables via ODBC: File > Get External Data > Import and then choose the ODBC file type and it will pop up a DSN window. Good luck.

Seems pretty zippy for me as well.
As for Enterprise Manager being slow on XP, make certain that you've applied the latest Service Packs (yes they not only apply to the Database Engine but the Client Tools as well). Several fixes in SP1 and SP2 corrected some response time issues with Enterprise Manager. Personally based at the quick look I took a while ago at Max Web Portal I wouldn't have said it was the best code in the world. Snitz (latest version) is pretty well written and shouldnt cause any problems (same can't be said about some of the portals based on it though) Last edited by Brangwyn : 02-14-2003 at 10:52 PM. |
