LCD monitor suggestions

I'm in the market for a bad-ass LCD monitor, but am finding it difficult to gather some good down-to-earth monitor reviews on the web.

I have a dell 1800FP, and while I don't mind the size, it's not considered the best of monitors (it's kind of the runt of the dell ultrasharps). At max brightness, it's barely able to widthstand a sunny day in the office...

Anyone have an LCD that they would recommend for graphic work?

In particular, I'm considering the Dell 2001fp, or Planar PX191.

Going to be using for games or just general purpose usage ? if you using it for any games you'll want to get something with a nice fast refresh on it (which most new ones tend to have now anyway)

No games (!), just good color and contrast for graphic design use.

Just found dell is running a 25% offer on their 2001 again - that's $750. Not bad for a 1600x1200, I might just do that. Anyone have this monitor?

Usually can't go past a SONY imo, but they're usually a lot more costly than others too. I've got a couple of Philips ones here, can't beat them for price and have no problems with contrast etc either.

That dell one sounds like a bargin to me though.

I cannot get myself to move to a LCD. The colors are just not the same as CRT. Even with digital inputs it does not seem to make a difference.

Anyhow, I can't really answer your question. Just needed to chime in with my $0.02.

I have 3 lcd's but I get the lower 1024 end. Once I used one I could never go back to a crt.

I run a trinitron .22dpi 21" CRT at 1600x1200. As a developer, the number of windows I can have open on has been a big boost to my productivity. Couldn't afford a comparable lcd.

same here - 2 Viewsonic P810's - the best I've seen in a large LCD has been a Samsung 21" - It may even be 22" - what a display, but at about $1200 certainly no bargain, but I guess that at about $800 my ViewSonic's weren't all that much less. I figure I'll wait, seeing as all LCD displays are dropping in price pretty regularly.

I have a couple of customers with the dell flat's and they are a good LCD monitor, made even better when they come free with the system

After reading some steller reviews on them, I ended up getting a 2001FP from Dell - got 25% off too, which brought the price down to the planar - plus I got 1600x1200. For anyone else in the market - I can highly recommend the dell - sharp, no dead pixels, and a great resolution for the size.

I am yet to see an LCD that's at least as good as a CRT if you are going to be performing graphics work. Even on the high-end LCD's you do not get "true" colors. I think LCD's are great for the general users, but have no home on a power user's desk. Just my 2 cents!

In theory being digital the color reproduction on an LCD should actually be better than those of CRTs .. it just looks funny becuase your so used to looking at a soft CRT screen ... make sure your using digital output from your video card to LCD as well theres a noticable difference.

I uset a crt for years and finally decided to get an lcd.

I just bought a 19" samsung syncmaster 192n. compusa mismarked it so I got it for 609 then theres a $30 rebate. Thats only $579.00!

I know a lot of small shops like mine cant afford to upgrade, but I can already see the benefits including a lot more screen realestate to work with in photoshop, dreamweaver and multi applications.

Coundn't be happier.

I definitely recommend the 19" lcd samsung 192n

Brangwyn I cannot agree w/ that. LCD's are only now getting close to rgb guns. Of course I am comparing to a high quality trinitron. Not average invar shadow mask. The medium of color repro is important. Plasma is a different issue using a dif medium and reproducing better, in general than lcd. The contrast has improved greatly compared to what you are calling a "soft" image being a moire pattern. The color in an lcd requiring enough transistors to reproduce the same millions of colors has only just started to happen and the ghosting is a big issue of course w/ moving images. The digital to digital connector is significant, but you loose abilities in the lcd's to tweak color issues.

I think going w/ the other lcd over the planar was a good choice. Planars are ok, but not anything special. The high end sony's and samsung do seem to be among the few that can compete. Samsung's higher end are very nice.

If your needing extra real estate you can always go the multi monitor route too, I run 3 off this main PC here which if required can give me something like 3840x1024 rez .. generally I just run the 3 screens as seperate desktops though of 1280x1024 and the 2 side screens at 1024x768 (when doing web work I'll flick one of them down to 800x600 then I can see my pages at 3 different resolutions all at the same time too see if they work ok)

We replaced our high qaulity Trinitrons and Sonys with Samsung LCDS. I have not seen a CRT that even comes close to these babys and yes these are used for developers and the graphics designers alike.

Some of use run dual monitors too (well.. only me.) we also use the monitor arms so we can move them anyways we like.

They are expensive but nothing beats them.
