Name Server Change 3/15/06

On Wednesday 3/15/06 we will be turning servers NS and NS1 off for signup. We will be turning on servers NS2 and NS3. All new domain signups will be placed on servers NS2 and NS3.

This does not affect any domains currently added in H-Sphere. Only new domains added after Tuesday 3/14/06 will be affected.

Please keep this in mind when setting up new domains at their registrars.

So does that mean we should change our domain name server listing for new clients to ns2 and ns3?

Yes. Any new user you signup will be assigned to ns2 and ns3. Those are the name servers you will need to assign at their registrar.

Most likely around 7:30AM EST. If down to the hour timing is important for you, I suggest you verify the name servers for your new domains via the CP's 'Domain Info' panel before you update the registrar.

Your sites not resolving have nothing to do with this announcement. You need to submit a trouble ticket.

So we don't need to make any changes to our Resellers CP settings ? Just watch for the new NS settings to appear on accounts created after Vortech change the config at their level?

Just making sure I don't miss anything..

yeah you don't have to do anything in the reseller account - all 4 name servers shoudl be added in the server alias section and once they make the change any new domains you add will have the new namesevers added to them by default.
Just make sure that you have all four added at your domain registrar and if you have any help info or dns info on your websites then you will need to update it with the new nameserver names and ip's

Also they do this every so often to balance the load on both sets of nameservers.

This seems to be throwing wrenches into the gears....

So, any new domain that's created (either in a new account, or existing one) will have to be referenced to the new NS2 and NS3 nameservers, correct?

Now we simply can't say (by easy memory) . . use NS.hostdomain.com and NS1.host... Right now, it's easy, but say in 6 or 9 or 24 months, we'll have to go back and check which NS it's assigned to? (Unless we have a photograhic memory, and can remember every domain that was created on or after March 14, 2006. I as the reseller, don't even see the domains my clients create, so now i have to ask - "when did you create the domain")

Another speedbump.... when an account initially get's signed up, the server info is email to them. It directs which NS to use. It's now shooting out NS2 and NS3, correctly. However, if an existing client (Account created before 3/14/06) adds a new domain, there is no email sent. (This has been bothersome even before this issue, simply because we had to refer to emails sent way prior, and many didn't have or don't keep) However, now, it's an actual problem in the CP New Domain Sign-up. After adding a domain, the CP states:

Quote:
Domain domain.com Internal Lookup Result
For your site to become available to the Internet, register or transfer the domain name domain.com with your local top level domain registrar using the information that we will provide for you upon the activation of your account.

1. The (new) info isn't provided, it was already provided. (when the top account was created.)
2. Now, the info is wrong - since the NS servers given in the inintial sign-up email are now different than the ones actually assigned. (assuming the account was created before 3/14/06)

It was so easy to remember, and say to everyone and anyone, use NS and NS1. Now, I have to log in and check which DNS Server the domain is assigned to. Quite the pain. Is there anyway to automagically get around this? Do we just instruct everyone to use all 4 Nameservers? That's odd, since it seems pretty standard out there to use just 2. More-so, the email sent automatically by CP only states to use 2. Do we manually send a recipricol email and say, disregard earlier, and use these 4 nameservers. And what happens when you put 2 more online, and have 6 options. Most, if not all, registrars only allow for 4 nameservers to be listed.

How, for instance, does a mega host, like www.1and1.com get away with using the same two Nameservers for ALL of their hosting? (I was with them for years, and used the same two the entire time)

Sorry for the ranting, but I'm just not clear as to the why's and how's. (Okay, i understand the why's and how's, it's just not as smooth as once was... It was pretty much brainless before, now with options, it's not.)

Unless it's it's been changed . . . the welcome email is only sent when the account was initially created. (The account, not any new domains created after the account was created) If the account was created before 3/14/06, it will have been sent the old NS settings, back when they created it, as you state. However, if they create a new domain (in the existing account) the domain will require the new settings, but they were emailed different ones prior.

So, this is only correct on new accounts created after 3/16. (Again, if it's working the way it used to . . . I cannot speak if the process has been changed along with this new NS change.)

See my post above for the implications with this....

But if your adding a domain it will tell you after it adds it the name servers, no need to even look at the email if you just adding another domian as it tells you right then on the screen.
