Mail8 8/11/2005 1:52pm

After several attempts to bring Mail8 online, we had a technician log in to the machine at the Data Center. It is having system hard drive errors. Our current plan is to reinstall the OS drive at this time. We are working as fast as possible and we have several technicians on the issue at the moment.

Please be patient and work with us on this issue. Mail will not be lost that is sent due to internet standards and the RFC for mail. Mail will be queued for a period of time before it is set as undeliverable. We will update this post upon new information.

Thanks for the update. Do you have an ETA when the server will come back online. I understand mail will be delayed to to messages being queued.

Cool

My guess is that it will be ready when it's ready. I'm waiting on it also, but if they are updating a status every 10 minutes, they can't be fixing it.

Remember this is a mail server with 10,000 + domains and 100,000+ users. They are working on it but in cases like this it's very hard to give an ETA. They are doing everything they can to be 100% sure all data is recovered. If they take the wrong steps the down time could be more.

If you want an ETA and thats all it is. I would say maybe 2+ to 3+ hours to be safe. But it could be shorter or longer.

Update:

We are still working on the issue. Please keep in mind it is not as easy as just reinstalling an OS. If it was that easy there would be no need for administrators. Please understand there is no benefit for us not to get the server back up ASAP. The admins working on the issue have had a few road blocks and are dealing with them as they occur.

We will update this thread when we can and when new info is available. Again, understand we understand how critical mail is for your companies. This is our #1 priority.

As far as mail being lost prior to the failure. As long as it is only the OS drive your data will not be lost. If it is a data drive there could effectivly be lost data. When the techs check in again I will update this thread. I like to let them keep their minds on the task at hand and not interrupt them.

We cannot be moved to a different server so we can get new messages? What is the policy if our data is lost?

Are we talking more than 2 or 3 hours now? I know you guys are working hard on it, but I can't keep telling my clients another 2 hours if it is more like 5 or 6.

Hi guys I just wanted to say keep up the good work I know it is hard to say when times are tuff. I am fortunate only part of my clients are on mail8 and the other servers I’m on are working fine just keep us updated on the status and ETA. As you know if we tell clients a good ETA they will understand.

Update:

The technicians are making good strides at the moment. They are installing a few components now that should bring the server back online.

This is only speculation. I am overlooking the technicians at the moment. I just wanted to keep you all in the loop. There is no time line on this.

Mcspec-
The data for your email is on the data drive not the system drive. Moving accounts would take way more time then rebuilding the breakage.

Bmarlin, I totally understand your concern. Thank you for the kind words as well. Understand when you received the approx time from the tech that was the thought process and time line for the fix that was in progress. That fix failed. Then you have to start from scratch again. Then to yet again have another possible fix fail. That is why the timeline keeps growing. To be honest I do not like to deal with giving time lines as they are never accurate in any business. (That is purely my opinion, none of which reflects Vortech.)

gene0-
Thank you for the kind words. It does help to know that our hard work and knowledge is acknowledged.

Another update will be posted when I hve more info to post here.

Update:

Mail8 is online and seriously processing lots of mail. The plan is to let the server catch up and then later tonight or tomorrow morning take the server back to the Data Center. This post will be updated for the move to the Data Center. Again, we will wait for the server to process teh queued mail and then make the move.
