Just a quick note:

It seems my sites have all been responding much better over the past couple weeks. Who knows what really goes on behind the scenes, but whatever problems were evident, they seem to be largely fixed now. Thanks, all, for your valuable feedback.

My sites still respond dog slow... blah. I've come to accept the fact I need to go back to dedicated hosting if I want good response.
