Is there anyway the server can be kept unavailable while the recovery is in process ?
Right now all sites are going to the default hsphere page ("Your account has been created....").... This is causing a lot of confusion (and might also account for a lot of "new members" on this forum).

I'd rather our customers just get a "page not found" rather than this.

I second the "blank page" idea rather than the default control panel pages. My clients don't ever see a control panel so they are very confused.

unless of course you actually take the time to make backups, or have a local hard drive from which you ftp the information. vortech does a great job to keep the pipe of the net open for a good price. they do not provide backup guarantee so I would not expect it. (just hope and pray for it!)

I agree that this is a disaster for anyone with sites on the server. But if your sites are that critical, maybe you should look at hosting them somewhere that accomidates those sorts of website. I for one have a number site I host elsewhere, on servers where uptime is essential (and obviously the hosting cost reflects that). To be honest we get a damn good deal when it comes to the price we pay for the service we receive here.

I'm totally agree with you. it cost money for good service. You got what you are paying for.
but is there such a host company that never have down?

When I signed up here, it was first experience with hsphere and i got "discount price or special offer" is this mean i got a "not so good server". i donot mean to be disrespectful but like to hear the truth.
i had complaint from domains on nt, my clients said are slow as well

If the cost reflect a better service i would like to hear about it. moving around host is not my ideas. And i thing you guys here give a great support.
thanks.

how do we pevent for something like this to happen again, I donot want to look incompetent in front of my clients.

this is not really the place for this I suppose, but I'll tell you my philosophy. I am a programmer and do some design and I tell people "I will put your stuff on the place where I host" and I resell that service for their questions / my time. But I don't guarantee a thing to people about uptime. I tell them that if they have a mission critical app and need super uptime, then I will help them find appropriate hosting. I have a customer now paying over $1000 a month at Rackspace for a dedicated 2003 box with SQL server and super unreal tech support. I could swear they have a guy just staring at the screen to make sure it's working. But then again, that's a cost they wanted to incur. They do 500K a year on the web, so 1K a month is reasonable to them

just keep in mind it's not their job to back the data up. Whether they do it or not, it's not part of the SLA for them to bring back data. I hope to get it back too, but it's not like we can do anything more than get mad at ourselves for not backing it up if they can't get it back

The CP creator script has completed.

Restored sites will now come online as they are restored. The permissions are not correct yet, so some functions will not work properly. Permissions will be reset once the restore is complete.

At this point, I would say 6 - 8 hours for full permissions to be restored and ASPNET to be reactivated.

can you help me out a bit - not sure I follow. Before when I ftp'd in, I would see all my domains but they were just "blank" with the default control panel. Now when I ftp in, it's totally blank, not domains, no nothing. I am not sure I understand what the "CP creator" being done means to me. Means hsphere is ok but I am waiting for the physical files to come back? Wouldn't I still see the domains?

In order to speed up the process, we run the CP creation and the backup restoration in parallel. The CP restore creates skeleton directories for all domains. At the same time, we are restoring backups to an alternate location. Once the CP portion is done, we rename the CP's hshome directory and put the restoration directory in its place. Any accounts that have not yet been restored from backup would no longer appear in FTP. This has the benefit of getting at least half the domains back on the web and the others will come back online as soon as the restoration process gets to them.

One of my sites came back up but....

CLCPhotography.com came back up with little loss of data but one thing I have noticed is how slow it is getting on to the website to the photo gallery. This is a ASP and SQL DB based website and it should be faster and was faster before today. Can someone please look into this and let me know if it is b/c of the restoring permissions? Thanks in advance.

i would guess maybe because the server is probably maxed out moving gigabytes of data back onto the server - many people are still not back live and all that data is being copied on - the server is probably working overtime right now
