tzo.com and no-ip.com

A friend mentioned that to make sure there are never dns issues again I should consider having a company like tzo or no-ip server up my ip's for my name servers. Anyone use these guys before?

Those are both really designed for people on dynamic IP addresses to be able to get a "static" URL to point to their machine/server.

You may be able to use them as a backup service (though I doubt it actually), but gee it would be a real PITA, you'd have to update everything both here and there whenever you change anything.

Hey Brangwyn thanks for respoinding did you take a look at the no-ip's squared product? http://www.no-ip.com/services.php/page/squared it is geared to act as a dns backup - I thought this one might be more something I could use as a backup without too much trouble - meaning I just add their additional nameservers to my service domain and if for some reason my nameservers are being funky then the squared product would keep it afloat?

Am I wrong?

Only if it pulls your zone file from Vortech would it be usefull imo .. back to that having to change everything manually.

At the end of the day, heres the deal, if Vortech are having problems, then theres a strong chance not just DNS is down there may be other things going on as well so even having backup DNS isn't going to guarantee your site doesn't go off the air.

The problems you seem to be having recently arent DNS related they are registrar related having backup DNS wouldn't have made any difference to the problem you posted about here http://forum.vortechhosting.com/show...5394#post65394

If you're having DNS issues because the nameserver is down, thats one thing. The service you listed could help that. Of course, I can't think of any downtime our Nameservers have experienced over the past year. Most people I see trying to use services like this fail becuase they don't understand the difference between an A record and a MX record, let alone the fact that their webserver is not their mail server...

If you're having DNS issues because your DNS is not setup properly, thats another. These services won't magically make your DNS work. Chances are if you can't get the nameservers pointed right, you probably don't know which records to add, and will have the issues I described in my previous paragaph (rant).

Basically what happened is my registrar did a restore with an old set of records and set my nameservers to ips that are no longer used for my boxes (the dropped ip). I was down for 24 hours (all my clients very unhappy). This basically was out of my control, I had set the numbers correctly - and had not been in my control panel for that domain. When they restored the old numbers were re-populated across the system thus taking me down. What I am looking for basically (beside transferring - which is what I am going to do) is to find a fail safe. I have one person that runs an ISP that uses my services and he had clients himself to call yesterday. As you know - its not acceptable for a webhosting company to be down for 24 hours.
