Question about DNS records for reseller`s server aliases.
I recently went into my reseller admin panel and saw there were new servers to submit in the E Manager:Server Aliases area. After submitting the update, I always like to check the DNS records to make certain they did actually update. They appear to, but I noticed something that has me curious.
Most of the records for server aliases are CNAME records, but now several of them are A records with an IP address. Example: unix6.mydomain.net 86400 IN CNAME unix6.hsphere.cc unix8.mydomain.net 86400 IN A 216.157.133.XXX I thought this odd, as the CNAME should provide more flexibility without having to update the DNS. Any explanation for this?

That part I understand landiserve. What I'd like to know now is if the CNAME records currently are going to be updated automatically, or whether I have to do something to reset them.

Oh, you need to delete them and resubmit them, they can't change automatically.

for anyone that may be interested in doing this:
Go to e.manager Then to Server Aliases Click the trash can next to every server alias under "Other Resellers Aliases" (not the two DNS servers) Then resubmit all of the aliases to make DNS A records. This fixes some problems with hotmail (not all hotmail is having huge problems with SMTP services recently) and is overall a better method of aliasing. |

landiserve, thanks for the help. The change went smoothly and everything seems to be working at the present. It will be interesting to see if this helps resolve the email bounces and timeouts that some of my customers were complaining about.

Technically CNAME's shouldnt be used for mail servers, whilst the RFC does allow it, it does cause problems so this was really a nice welcomed implementation from psoft imo.
