re: 5MB e-mail size limit...

Just wondering if you had considered removing the 5MB size limit from e-mails now...

Since I haven't heard much chatter about this, I would think allowing large files again wouldn't put much of an additional load on your systems, as it is only rarely needed by the users. BUT when it IS needed - like today, when a client tried sending me a graphics file - it's very difficult to find alternate delivery method.

If I recall correctly, you turned on this e-mail size limit during the last bad worm outbreak... If that's still one of the reasons you might be using for keeping the limit, I would disagree with you. You've got SpamAssassin now which can filter out any attachments you choose... so, during the next outbreak, you could control any incoming avalanche MUCH better than before.

Please consider removing the e-mail size limit, and deal with any system abuse on a case-by-case basis - rather than penalize the rare user who just needs to get a large file through every once in a while...

I just talked with matt, we are going to try it over the weekend and see if it has any issues, if the servers stay stable and no one is abusing the system we will leave it off.

Strange... Could it be maybe the size-limit is hiding another issue? Seems weird that everyone would suddenly start sending large messages or thousands more the moment you flipped the switch.... so maybe this setting is effecting something else - and/or I just don't understanding how the queue thing works...

When was the last time you checked the mail1 Q though ? I've been trying to diagnose a problem with customer mail the last 2 days where they keep getting "out of space" error trying to send mail via SMTP

I think mail1 needs a HD enlargement... I'll see about doing that next week.

Don't know if this helps the discussion, but after you flipped the switch last night, I noticed a immediate and significant increase in SPAM - both filtered and non-filtered.

Now, this increase in number has nothing to do with the message size... so I guess I'll just ask the question again... Is it possible that the control for message size is masking some other issue related to the other filtering mechanisms? The resulting effects don't seem to be matching the cause (or configuration change)...

my 2 cents ends up being 0.5 after taxes...

tkraffty, any chance you've recently had an autoresponder set for your email address? I did while on vacation for about 10 days this month, and my spam level has gone through the roof

Unfortunately autoresponders were a useful thing, but you can't really use them anymore since they can create some real problems due to SPAMMERS!
I suspect I have had a few spammers phishing for my hsphere support email, which, of course, has an autoresponder.
