Hsphere and Cpanel mail servers now ALSO listen on port 2525. They will STILL listen on 25 as well. This is for people whos ISP's are blocking port 25. Most mail clients will let you change to non-standard ports.
Just to be clear: Hsphere and Cpanel mail servers listen for SMTP on ports 25 and 2525. I am not sure which is harder teaching your customers how to change their mail client to use port 2525 or explaining to them that their email won't change if they use their ISP's mail server, but now THE CHOICE IS YOURS! ![]() Last edited by bigdave : 03-06-2004 at 04:39 PM. |

Very nice to have the option. I always like options...well usually,... anyway.

Yes, thanks for that. I just had a customer email me today complaining that mail was getting blocked. Turned out his ISP had got it's mailserver on a blacklist, and was re-routing all port 25 traffic to it's own server, so I couldn't get around it (until I read this post, that is!).

This was the clincher to me signing up to a new account this morning. In the UK, so many of the major ISPs are blocking 25 and 110 so this is a fantastic bonus. Hooray!!

OK, someone has to do it, I will reveal my ignorance. How would one set up an Outlook email client to get around the ISP blocking port 25, so that one would be able to get to the email server which is now listening on port 225.
By the way, so far Comcast in Plano Texas has not blocked outgoing email from getting to our servers. It may be becuase we used to be ATT Broadband. |

I don't use outlook, but it should be somewhere like account settings/advanced - should show you what ports are set for POP3 and SMTP

In Entourage it's
tools/accounts Select an account. Click edit. Look for the sending mail config section. CPanel users - For smtp server enter mail.yourdomain.com (or relevent TLD) HSphere users - I'm not sure the correct mail server info. Click Advanced sending options. You will see a place to overide the default smtp port 25. Enter the other port now available here. |

Do you mean it was the ATT side that got acquired? I doubt that matters. I haven't seen any port blocking here for them at all from old comcast to the newly acquired ATT. Comcast is still kinda mixed up and inconsistent in their policies and communications. ![]() |

Whoope-Dee-Do
Finally, no more calls at the middle of the night about mail not going through.
just tell the little darlings to check if they can do this from the command prompt (Start>Run) > telnet mail.theirwebsite.com 2525 if so, then they should just use that setup in their mail program. wheeeew. The mail must go through, heheh. |

Yes, when Comcast bought AT&T broadband, we got switched. It does appear to me that little integration into Comcast has occurred, accounting for lots of variation across the company. This is probably a good thing. Whenever I have service problems, I sit in queue for a very short period of time, and then a tech who is actually local (not in new jersey or new zealand ) walks me through various trouble shooting steps, and we ususally get it reset while I am on the phone. One of my clients has SBC DSL. If they go down, well, don't expect any help. Even if you get through to a tech, forget support. Comcast considers the modem part of their service. SWB simply wants to assure you that the line is fine, and it must be the DSL Modem or your network. Won't even talk to you until you unplug your router, and plug a computer into the DSL Modem. Even if you bought the modem from them, ( since the salesman said that would give you seamless support ), the SWB tech transfers you to the support tech for the modem manufacturer. Fortunately the DSL modem tech provided my client with much better service and support. About that time the SWB network came back up. Seems they had an area wide outage, but the SWB tech was unaware of the outage (not sure where he was located) , and trained to point the finger elsewhere. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest. ![]() |
