Talking Ajax

After much discussion with the higher tech's we are looking into implementing AJAX on our Windows servers. Keep checking this forum for updates on when it will be implemented.

If you guys could give us the server you are on we can see which nt server we will implement it on first. There will be a trial period before we install it on all servers.

Good News !

You can try out AJAX installation on the latest or new servers (nt51,52) since they should already have asp.net

Bye !

Sighs, I really need Vortech to start catching up with the rest of the industry on asp.net stuff a little faster. Getting all this done.. and now .NET 3.5 is right around the corner with Visual Studio.Net 2008 being released next month is a sad state of affairs.

.NET3 and .NET3.5 don't bring much to the table for web developers especially if we get AJAX installed which is now simply bundled in with .NET3.5 (VS2008 brings more new web features though).. The latest version of ASP.NET is still ASP.NET 2.0 (SP1?)

Chances are we will throw ajax on a new server, or possibly NT52. After all, NT52 was our test server for asp 2.0

I'm not much for ASP coding, but have there been any major changes in the 2.0 to 3.5 framework?

We are now testing Ajax support on NT52, if all goes well we will start to upgrade AJAX on all of our other 2k3 servers in the next week or 2 weeks. If any of you want to use it please send in a support ticket and I'll be more than happy to move you to 52

I don't understand... what stops us using AJAX? It's just javascript, there's nothing needed on the server to support AJAX, except coding some scripts to respond to the browser's XMLHTTP object calls. It's not dependent on .NET, you can do AJAX in classic ASP, php, or CGI if you really want to.

In .NET there are 2 types of controls. HTML controls with the runat="server" attribute and an ID to get access and there are server controls. Server controls are very powerful. .NET comes with many prebuilt server controls. You can also build new server controls through inheritance and coding. AJAX.Net supports prebuilt server controls with AJAX already enabled on them. AJAX.NET sets up all the Javascript for these prebuilt controls. You can of course subclass them or build your own.

.NET 3.0 and 3.5

ASP.NET 3.0 includes WCF and WWF, which can both have significant benefits to web developers (WCF more than WWF in my opinion, but some people find WWF useful). ASP.NET 3.5 is required to run the new ASP.NET MVC framework, which can also be of significant benefit. The lack of both of these on Vortech servers is causing me to have to delay several updates to my sites.

I agree with the previous poster: I love Vortech, but I am a .NET developer, and I host primarly .NET websites. The wait for 2.0 was intolerable, and if they continue the .NET upgrades at such an appallingly slow pace, I really don't think I am going to have any choice but to find another hoster.
